Autumn Budapest
Budapest is the main city and capital of Hungary, where the majority of the country’s population lives. But you already know that, right? Even during the times of the USSR, Hungary was a relatively accessible foreign country. And even now, under the visa-free regime, you can reach Budapest in general. What can be done in the capital of Hungary in autumn?
Есть
Hungarians themselves may not eat goulash three times a day. But for tourists, this dish is offered at every step and in every restaurant – with the exception, perhaps, of chain establishments such as King Burger. Goulash is not necessarily the first dish. These are pieces of stewed meat with vegetables, which can be served with or without broth. Just as in Ukraine every housewife has her own recipe for borscht, so in Budapest every establishment prepares its own version of goulash. You can organize a goulash challenge and shoot a sample in a new restaurant every day. Or not even in one.
But the tourist in Budapest is not the only goulash. There is paprikash – chicken with paprika. There is phasel – vegetables stewed in sauce. Finally, there is a well-known lecho. If you don’t like food without bread, try langosh – white inside out. This is a cake fried in oil, on which the filling is placed on top. Caution: langoustines are very fatty, consult your stomach before ordering.
Sweets in Budapest are also not just good, but wonderful. On every corner, kurtosh kalach, a bun on a pipe, is sold. Previously, they were baked on heated oven pipes in the kitchen, now they use electric ovens. The steaming bun is sprinkled with powdered sugar, cinnamon, chocolate chips, and a dozen other delicious seasonings of your choice. And in pastry shops you will find a lot of desserts – marzipan, strudel, cakes – that have taken root in the local cuisine since the times of Austria-Hungary. By the way, coffee has also successfully adapted in Hungary, and now is the time to think about what we will drink.
Drink
Hungary is a wine country. To the northwest of Budapest, near the Ukrainian city of Uzhgorod, is the town of Tokai, the capital of local winemaking. A variety of wine was named after this town. And of course, in Budapest, Tokai wines are everywhere. Even at a price of less than one euro, you can buy a local wine in a supermarket, and it will turn out to be quite decent. Most establishments offer house wine. As a rule, it tastes the same as bottled wine, only cheaper.
And Budapest is a city with an active nightlife. It was here that the famous ruin pubs were invented – parties in dilapidated historical buildings where there are no sleeping neighbors. For fun discos after midnight, the most appropriate drink is a cocktail. The center of Budapest is full of bars serving the world’s most popular cocktails. And in some you can order a unique cocktail to your taste: sourer or sweeter, stronger or lighter… A little life hack: you only need to cross the border of the central quarter of the city, as the price of cocktails drops by 30%, or even by half. But the number of institutions is also noticeably decreasing.
As for beer, of course there is it here. And they say, there are also good varieties. But in order to understand the varieties of Hungarian beer, you need to be a real lover of this drink. The majority prefers to drink wine or cocktails in Hungary, and go to neighboring Austria for beer.
Admire
Budapest is beautiful at any time of the year. But autumn decorates it in a special way. The best places for autumn walks in Budapest are Margiszyget Island and Hellera Mountain. Both there and here you will find charming corners where late autumn flowers are touchingly combined with yellowed trees and fallen leaves. If you are not a fan of long walks, just walk along the Danube embankment. Amazingly beautiful buildings and bridges, a majestic river and flocks of seagulls are a feast for the eyes and the soul.
Bathe
Late autumn is a great time to visit baths with outdoor pools, such as the oldest bathhouse in Szechenyi, or the local water park. In the Secheny swimming pool in the open pool, the water temperature is 36 degrees. When it is cool outside, there is a wonderful contrast between the temperature of the air and the water. And at the same time, it is not yet so cold in the fall that getting out of the pool again into the air was difficult, as in the winter.
Therefore, if you have a biometric passport and have no plans for the weekend, go to Budapest. You will like it.
